Air Brakes
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Why must air tanks be drained? | Compressed air usually has some water and compressor oil in which can freeze in cold weather and cause break failure. Drain at the end of each day driving. |
What is a supply pressure gauge used for? | This gauge tells you how much pressure is in the air tank. |
All vehicles with air brakes must have a low air pressure warning signal. True or False? | True |
What are spring brakes? | If the air brakes leak down, springs press the brakes on to stop the vehicle. |
Front wheel brakes are good under all conditions. True or False? | True |
How do you know if your vehicle is equipped with anti lock brakes? | Trucks Buses and Tractors will have yellow ABS malfunction lamps on the instrument panel. Trailers will have yellow ABS malfunction lamps on the left side, either on the front or rear corner. |
What is a dual air brake system? | A two brake system, one operates the front brakes and one operates the back brakes. |
What are slack adjusters? | It is an adjusting nut on the backside of the brake drum used for adjusting the brakes. |
How can you check slack adjuster? | Park on level ground, choke wheels to prevent vehicle from moving, turn off parking brakes, pull hard on each slack adjuster. It shouldn't move more than one inch. |
How can you test the low pressure warning signal? | Shut off the engine with enough air pressure, turn on the electrical power and step on and off the brake pedal until the low air pressure warning signal comes on.Low air pressure warning signal must come on before pressure drops to less than 60PSI. |
How can you check that spring brakes come on automatically ? | Park on level ground and choke wheels and release parking brake when you have enough pressure. Step on and off the brake, with the engine off, the parking brake knob should pop out when air pressure falls between 20-40 psi. |
What are the maximum air leakage rates? | Less than two psi in one minute for single vehicles and less than three psi in one minute for combination vehicles. |
Why should you be in the proper gear before starting down a hill? | So you only have to apply the brake just hard enough to feel a definite slowdown. |
What factors can cause brakes to fade or fail? | Over heating, low air pressure, and not relying on the engine braking effect. |
The use of brakes on a long, steep downgrade is only a supplement to the breaking effect. True or False? | True. |
If you are away from your vehicle only a short time, you do not need to use the parking break. True or False? | False. Any time you park use the parking break except when they are very hot (steep downgrade) or in extreme cold temperatures when the brakes are very wet they can freeze. |
How often should you drain air tanks? | Daily. |
How do you brake when you drive a tractor-trailer combination with ABS? | You should brake as you always have. |
You still have normal brake functions if your ABS is not working. True or False ? | True. |
What is the total stopping distance for vehicles with air brake systems? | Perception distance +Reaction distance+ Brake Lag distance + Braking distance = Total Stopping Distance |
What is the purpose of an alcohol evaporator? | To reduce the risk of ice in the brake valves and other parts in cold weather. |
If oil and water collect in the air tanks what can happen to the brakes? | The brakes could fail. |
