Vocabulary

TermDefinition
theme the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person's thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic.
setting the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.
resolution a firm decision to do or not to do something.
motif a decorative design or pattern.
exposition a comprehensive description and explanation of an idea or theory.
archetype a very typical example of a certain person or thing.
symbol a thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract
rising action In the rising action, a series of related incidents build toward the point of greatest interest.
precis a summary or abstract of a text or speech.
characterization Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
climax the most intense, exciting, or important point of something; a culmination or apex.
protagonist the leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text.
plot is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story or the main part of a story.
falling action Falling action is defined as the parts of a story after the climax and before the very end.
