Plot the series of events in a piece of literature
Exposition/basic situation the beginning of a short story which includes the setting, the major characters, and the initial conflict
Rising action the part of the plot where complications to the conflict develop and increase the reader interest
Climax the point of greatest emotional intensity, interest or suspense in the plot of a literary work. It is also called the turning point. The climax typically comes near the end of the story
Falling action in a play or a story, the action that follows the climax. the falling action may show the results of the climax
Resolution also called the denouement, a French word meaning "unknotting" the resolution is the part of the plot that concludes the falling action by revealing or suggesting the outcome of the conflict
Setting the time or place of action of the story
Static character a character who does not change during the story
Dynamic character the dynamic character changes during the story
Conflict the struggle between opposing forces in a story or a drama
Internal conflict internal conflict occurs is a struggle that takes place within the mind of a character who is torn between opposing feelings or goals
External conflict exists when a character struggles with some outside force such as another person, nature, society, or fate
Mood the emotional quality of a literary work. a writer's choice of language, subject matter, setting, diction and use of sound devices
Theme the main idea of a story,poem, novel or play often expressed as a general statement about life. themes may actually be stated, or they can be implied. a literary work may have more than one theme.
Protagonist the central character in a literary work, around whom the main conflict revolves. this is the character who is the focus of the literary work. he or she moves the plot. generally the reader or audience is meant to sympathize
Antagonist a person or a force in society or nature that opposes the protagonist,or central character in a story or drama. typically , the leader is not meant to sympathize with the antagonist
