allusion a literary reference to a familiar person, place, or thing
analogy a comparison of two or more similar objects, suggesting that if they are alike in certain respects, they will also be alike in other ways
analysis carefully examining a subject to gain understanding
anecdote a short summary of an interesting or humorous incident
antagonist the person or thing working against the hero
audience the people who read or hear what you have written
aside an actor speaks directly to the audience and no one on stage hears
ballad a poem in verse forms that tells a story; songs and poems of the common people
coherence the arrangement of ideas in such a way that the reader can easily follow from one point to the next
climax the turning point, and usually most intense point, in a story
conflict the problem or struggle in the story that triggers the action
man vs. man, man vs. society, man vs. self, man vs. nature, man vs. fate 5 types of conflict
diction the author's word choice
epic a long narrative poem that tells of the adventures of a hero
epitaph a verse written in memory of someone (usually on a tombstone or shrine)
foreshadowing hints of what is to come later in a story
irony using a word or phrase to mean the exact opposite of its literal or normal meaning
juxtaposition placing two ideas (words or pictures) side by side so that they create a new, often ironic meaning
persona the voice or personality an author assumes for a particular purpose
poetic justice a term that describes a character "getting what he deserves" in the end
prose writing or speaking in the usual form
protagonist the main character or hero of a story
soliloquy a speech delivered by an actor when he is alone on stage
symbol person, place, thing, or event used to represent something else
theme a statement about life that the author is trying to get across to the reader
transitions words or phrases that help tie ideas together
