Spelling rules from Spellodrome
| 'i' before 'e' except after: | 'c' with the sound of 'eeeee' e.g. belief, receive |
| When adding 'y' to a word ending in 'e' you: | Drop the 'e' before adding the 'y' e.g. noise + y = noisy |
| When a word ends in an 'e', the 'e' is usually kept when: | A suffix beginning with a consonant is added e.g. noise + less = noiseless |
| When a word ends in an 'e', the 'e' is usually dropped when: | A suffix beginning with a vowel is added e.g. love + able = lovable |
| The prefixes 'dis-' and 'mis-' never: | Drop their 's', even when added to a word beginning with 's' e.g. 'dis' + 'ability' = disability, 'dis' + 'satisfied' = dissatisfied |
| When a word ends in -x or -s add: When a word ends in a vowel y usually: When a word ends in a consonant y usually: | -es for a plural just add -s for a plural replace the y with -ies for a plural |
