Eight parts of speech

TermDefinition
Nouns name things
Pronouns A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun for subject, object, or possessive cases.
Verbs Indicate action
Adjectives describe nouns so we know what things are like
adverbs modify verbs and adjectives
What do adverbs typically end with? ly
Words that end with ly that aren't adverbs contumely, surly and jolly
One adverb that doesn't end with ly well
Conjunctions join words and phrases
coordinating conjunctions examples and, but, or, nor, yet
subordinating conjunctions such as if, because, although, until
Prepositions such as at, for, to and with come before nouns or pronouns to link them to another word in the sentence.
Interjections are words or phrases used to exclaim or protest or command.
Articles Come before a noun to show whether it's definite (the pistachio), or indefinite (a bookshelf)
