QuestionAnswer
alliteration beginning several neighboring words with the same sound.
allusion reference to a mythological, literary, or historical person, place, or thing.
antithesis to place structurally parallel words, phrases, or clauses side by side for the purpose of contrast.
apostrophe a form of personification in which the absent or dead are spoken to as if present and the inanimate, as if animate.
assonanace repetition of accented vowel sounds in a series of words.
consonance repetition of a consonant sound within a series of words.
details facts revealed by the author or speaker.
diction word choice.
figures of speech an imaginative comparison between seemingly unlike things (simile, metaphor, personification.)
flashback a scene that interrupts the action to show a previous event.
foreshadowing the use of hints or clues to suggest future action.
hyperbole a deliberate exaggeration.
imagery language used to produce an image in a reader’s mind. It appeals to the senses.
irony something unexpected.
metaphor a comparison stating one thing "is" another.
