Reading Fiction (Elements of a Story)

QuestionAnswer
The chain of events that make up the story. Composed of an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Plot
The opening of a story that sets the scene,introduces characters, and reveals background information. Exposition
The part of a story in which events begin moving toward a climax. Rising Action
The point at which the outcome of the conflict is decided. Climax
The events following the climax and bring the story to its conclusion. Falling Action
The end of the story. Also called dénouement which is French for "untying". Resolution
The underlying meaning of a story or the perception about life or human nature that the writer conveys to the reader. may be revealed to the reader through the title, words, or phrases about important ideas, or the lessons learned throughout the story. Theme
Are the people, animals, or imaginary creature who take part in the action. Character
Change as a result of events. Often main character. Dynamic Character
Remain unchanged throughout the story. Often minor characters. Static character
The central struggle between two or more forces in a story. Most plots are created out of one or more What? Conflict
When does conflict occur? When some person or thing prevents the protagonist from achieving his or her intended goal.
What are the 3 types of conflict? person vs. person (a character is in conflict with another human). person vs. nature (a character is in conflict with elements occurring in nature). person vs. self (a character is in conflict with his or herself).
The particular time and place in which the story occurs. Setting
What is resolved at climax? Conflict
Caused by conflict; may exist between characters or a character and his or her situation. May be internal or external. Often begins in the rising action. Complications
The uncertainty or anxiety that a reader feels about what will happen next in the story. Also created when a character's fate is clear to the audience but not to the character involved. Suspense
Use of clues or hints suggesting events that will occur later in the plot. May take the form of words, images, or actions. Foreshadowing
Creates suspense by making the character choose between 2 dangerous courses of action. Dilemma
A change in a character's situation from good to bad or vice versa. Often thimes, a specific result is expected but the opposite result occurs. Another name is peripeteia which is Greek for "sudden change." Reversal
