TermDefinition
algebra the branch of mathematics that involves expressions with variables
algebraic expression a combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation
arithmetic sequence a sequence in which each term is found by adding the same number
base in a power, the number used as a factor
coefficient the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable
constant a term that does not contain a variable
cubed the product in which in a number is a factor three times
defining the variable choosing a variable to represent an unknown value in a problem, and using it to write an expression or equation so solve the problem
equation a mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign
equivalent expressions expressions that have the same value
evaluate to find the value of an expression
exponent in a power, the number that tells how many times the base is used as a factor
exponential form numbers written with exponents
factors two or more numbers that are multiplied together to form a product
geometric sequence a sequence in which each term can be found by multiplying the previous term by the same number
gram a unit of mass in the metric system equivalent to 0.001 kilogram
kilogram the base unit of mass in the metric system equivalent to 1,000 grams
liter the base unit of capacity in the metric system, a little more than a quart
meter the base unit of length in the metric system
metric system a base-ten system of measurement using the base units: meter for length, kilogram for mass, and liter for capacity
numerical expression a combination of numbers and operations
order of operations the rules to follow when more than one operation is used in a numerical expression
powers numbers expressed using exponents
properties statements that are true for any number or variable
scientific notation a number written as a product of a number that is at least 1 but less than 10, and a power of ten
sequence a list of numbers in a certain order
solution a value for the variable that makes an equation true
solving an equation the process of finding a solution to an equation
squared a number multiplied by itself
standard form numbers written without exponents
term a number, a variable, or a product or quotient of numbers and variables/ each number in a sequence
variable a placeholder, usually a letter, used to represent an unspecified value in mathematical expressions or sentences

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
