deductive reasoning the process of using facts, properties, or rules to justify reasoning or reach valid conclusions
coordinate plane or coordinate system formed by the intersection of two number lines that meet at right angles at their zero points
counterexample an example that shows a conjecture is not true
defining a variable choosing a variable an a quantity for the variable to represent in an equation
domain the set of all x-coordinates from each pair of a relation
equation a mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign

graph a dot at the point that corresponds to an ordered pair on a coordinate plane
inductive reasoning conjecture based on a pattern of examples or past events
numerical expression a combination of numbers and operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
open sentence an equation that contains a variable
order of operations PEMDAS
ordered pair a pair of numbers used to locate any point on a coordinate plane
origin the point at which the number lines intersect in a coordinate system
properties statements of equality of two or more ratios
range all the y-coordinates from each ordered pairs in a relation
relation a set of ordered pairs
scatter plot a graph that shows the relationship between two sets of data
simplify to write an expression in simpler form
solution a value for the variable that makes an equation true
solving the equation the process of finding a solution to an equation
variable a placeholder for any value
x-axis the horizontal number line which helps to form the coordinate system
x-coordinate the first number of an ordered pair
