Earth's Layers

QuestionAnswer
How many layers of Earth are there? 4
What are they? The crust, mantle, inner core, and outer core.
Define the crust. It is the outermost layer that is very thin and brittle. It also contains oceanic crust and continental crust.
Define oceanic crust. It is thin, dense, and made out of basalt.
Define continental crust. It is thick, not very dense, and made out of granite.
What is the mantle? The mantle is a sheet of hot rock, contains the lithosphere and asthenosphere, and almost 3,000 km thick.
What is the asthenosphere? It is a layer in the mantle that can bend like plastic because of the heat and pressure.
What is the outer core? It is a liquid metal layer made of iron and nickel and surrounds the inner core.
What is the inner core? The inner core is a dense ball of solid metal:iron and nickel.
What does the inner core do? It creates Earth's magnetic field.
Define basalt. Basalt is the rock that makes up Earth's oceanic crust and is dense and dark-colored.
Define granite. Granite is the rock that makes up Earth's continental crust and isn't dense and light-colored.
What is seafloor spreading? Seafloor spreading is when new crust forms when plate boundaries spread apart.
Is the mantle connected with the inner core? No, because the outer core separates them.
Define Seismic waves. Seismic waves are waves of energy that are released from sudden plate movements and go in all directions.
What are constructive forces? Constructive forces are forces(like deposition) that build up the Earth's surface and forms mountains and other landforms.
What are deconstructive forces? Deconstructive forces are forces(like weathering) that wear away Earth's surface.
Is the crust connected with the mantle? Yes, by the lithosphere.
Which layer makes up most of the mass of Earth? The mantle.
Which makes the least? The crust

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
