| characterization | where the author (directly or indirectly) gives the character traits |
| internal conflict | where someone is fighting against himself |
| external conflict | where someone is fighting something they can't control |
| theme | the message of the story |
| irony | when things are the opposite of what is expected |
| personification | giving nonhuman object human traits/ abilities |
| simile | a comparison of two things using "like" or "as" |
| metaphor | a comparison of two things not using "like" or "as" |
| alliteration | using a set of words that starts with the same consonant consecutively |
| imagery | when the author describes describes a scene in such a way that |
| dramatic irony | irony where the audience knows something that the characters don't |
| foreshadowing | a hint that something significant is going to happen |
| allusion | a connection to another well known work of liteature |
| symbol | something that stands for something else |
