| Fiction | Writing that is not real and uses the author's imagination |
| Genre | A category of writing |
| Myth | Fictional tales that explain the actions of gods and heroes or explain nature |
| Folktale | Tales that communicate shared ideas of a culture |
| Fantasy | Stories that are highly imginative and contain elements not found in real life (for example: magic) |
| Legend | Stories often based on fact, but they have been exaggerated over time |
| Realistic Fiction | Fictional stories that include events that could happen in real life and do not contain elements of fantasy |
| Historical Fiction | Fictional stories that have real settings in the past |
| Science Fiction | Fictional Stories that use science or technology to create an extraordinary but believeable plot |
| Plot | The action or the series of events in a story |
| Character | The animals, people, or creatures in a story |
| Setting | When and Where (time and place) a story takes place |
| Conflict | The problem in the story |
| Internal Conflict | Emotional problems (chracter vs. self) |
| External Conflict | Problems on the outside (character vs. nature, society, or another character) |
| Exposition | This part of the plot introduces the characters, setting, and conflict |
| Rising Action | The suspenseful events in a plot that lead up to the climax |
| Climax | The turning point of the plot |
| Falling Action | The events in a plot after the climax where loose ends with the conflict and climax are tied up |
| Resolution | This part of the plot is a reasonable ending to the story |
| Theme | The message about life a story teaches the reader |
| Characterization | How an author creates, describes, and develops a character |
| Character traits | Personality qualities about a character |
| Point of view | Who is telling the story? |
| First person | A character tells the story and uses the pronouns "I" and "me" |
| Third person | A story told by an outside influence not involved in a story |
| Limited | The story follows and knows the thoughts of only one character |
| Omniscient | The story follows and knows the thoughts of more than one character |
| Dialogue | Conversations between characters |
| Dialect | An accent or a way a character talks due to living in a particular place |
| Mood | How a reader feels as he reads the story |
| Flashback | A scene in a story that interrupts a sequence of events to relate events that occurred in the past |
| Symbolism | When a person or object represents something with a deeper meanings |
| Foreshadowing | Clues or hints about what might happen next |
| Stated | The author tells you |
| Implied | The author shows you |
| Motivation | Why a character does what he/she does |
| Inference | To make an educated guess about what you have read |
