Examination and Treatment Areas

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires at least one examination room in a medical office be accessible to patients who use wheelchairs
The Medical Assistant may be responsible for assigning and monitoring janitorial workers
A minimum of two examination rooms per doctor enables the Medical Assistant to prepare one room while the physician examines a patient in another room
Standard furnishings for most examination rooms include: examination table, supply cabinet,rolling stool, wastebasket, biohazard bag waste containers, sharps containers, sink, overhead adjustable light or gooseneck lamp, computer, sphymo, balance scale for weight and height, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, a chair

Examination tables usually contain stirrups to perform a pelvic exam AKA a vaginal exam or a GYN exam

Dispose of the paper that covers the examination table and pillows after each client by quickly rolling the paper with the contaminated side on the inside
The Medical Assistant is responsible for gathering needed instruments and supplies
Typical medical supplies include: rubbing alcohol, povidone iodine, hydrogen peroxide, sterile normal saline solution or sterile water, sterile cotton tipped swabs, sterile tongue depressors, antibiotic ointment, sterile dressing, sterile gauze bandage, elastic bandages, adhesive tape
medical supplies continued: sterile drapes, emesis basin, examination gloves, penlight with pupil gauge, flashlights, water soluble lubricant, patient examination gown, reflex hammer, stethoscope, tape measure, thermometer, antiviral tissues, tuning fork, speculum, PAP smear kit
Medical supplies continued: microscope specimen slides and covers, cytology specimen slide fixative, cytology specimen slide transport container in a biohazard specimen transport bag, specimen bottles, sterile disposable syringes and needles, and a fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
Normal saline solution is AKA 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl)
The assortment of examination gloves should include latex with powder, latex with out powder, non-latex with powder, and non-latex with out powder
Types of specula include: nasal specula, vaginal specula, and rectal specula AKA anoscopes
Occult means hidden blood that cannot be seen with the naked eye
Names associated with fecal occult blood test include Hemoccult, Insure FIT, Hema-Check, Hematest, Seracult, and guaiac
Maintain the examination rooms at approximately 72 degrees
Have room deodorizers available to mask unpleasant odors
