| foreshadowing | a warning or hint of a future event |
| symbol | a concrete element of the story whose abstract meaning is not limited to a single interpretation of occurrence in a story |
| first person | the story is told by an "I" narrator. this is the least objective but most intimate style of narrator |
| third person | the reader sees the events through a single set of eyes. that character is never absent from the story. A little more objective |
| omniscient | the reader sees the events of the story from various objectives |
| verbal irony | a discrepancy between what a character says and what the character means or intends |
| dramatic irony | the discrepancy between knows and can see and what the reader knows and sees |
| irony of situation | a discrepancy between what a reader or character expected to have happen and what actually did |
| aside | a comment made only for some to hear |
| simile | a direct comparison without the use of like or as |
| caesura | a strong pause within a line of verse |
