Fiction & Nonfiction
| Term | Definition |

| Fiction | A form of writing that tells about made up characters and events. It includes things like setting, plot, and made up characters. |
| Nonfiction | Writing that deals with real people, events,or ideas. Nonfiction is told from the author's point of view or perspective. Someone's point of view is how they feel and think. |
| Plot | In fiction _____ is the the series of events that make up a story. |
| Characters | The imaginary (made up)characters or animals in a work of fiction. |
| Setting | The time and place of a story. |
| Narrator | The person who is telling the story. The narrator may or may not be a character in the story. |
| First-Person Point of View | The story is told by a character in the story. It uses the words I, me, mine, we, us, and ours a lot. |
| Third-Person Point of View | The story is told by a narrator outside of the story. The narrator is an observer. It uses character names, he, she, and they a lot. |
| Theme | The main lesson the author is trying to get across. |
| Biographies | Nonfiction that tells the story of someone's life. Told in third-person point of view. |
| Autobiographies | Tell that story of the author's life. Autobiographies are told in first-person point of view. |
| Journals/Diaries | Written records of daily events and the writer's thoughts and feelings about them. |
| Essays | Brief Written works based on a particular subject. |
| Informational Text | Nonfiction that is meant to teach you. For Example: history textbooks, math textbooks, and instruction manuals. |
| Speeches | Works that are delievered by speech to an audience. |
| Novels | Long works of fiction. A novel has a plot in which characters face a problem in a specific tme and place. In addition to its main plot, a novel may introduce subplots, or minor stories within a larger story. |
| Novellas | Works of fiction that are longer than short stories but shorter than novels. |
| Short Stories | A short work of fiction. Like a novel, it has made up characters, setting, and plot. Unlike a novel, it has a single conflict and it meant to be read in one setting. |
| Tone | The author's attitude or feelings about something. You can tell the author's tone by what he or she says. |
| Author's Purpose | The reason why an author writes something. It may be to entertain (for enjoyment), persuade (make someone do or think something), Inform (teach), express (let out feelings or emotions). |
