Satire Notes

Satire components and definitions

TermDefinition
What is satire? Artistic form in which individual or human vices are criticized.
Where is it found? Usually found in dramas and literature, but popping up in modern media forms.
What is the purpose? Encourage the public to view human faults or behaviors as humorous and ridiculous.
Two types? Horatian and Juvenalian
What is Horatian? Playfully criticizes vices with wit, exaggeration,gentle and light hearted humor,
What is Juvenalian? Criticizes social “evils” or corruption through scorn.
What is verbal irony? When a person says or writes one thing but means another.
What is situational irony? In literature or drama where persons or events come together in improbable situation.
What is dramatic irony? The reader knows something important that the characters don’t
What is an analogy? Two things that seem different, but can be compared in likeness because they have similar characteristics
What is an oxymoron? Figure of speech that combines contradictory words or phrases something that is surprisingly true.
What is sarcasm? Sharp expression or remark shown through irony or understatement.
What is an hyperbole/exaggeration? And extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended on being taken literally.
What is a Juxtaposition? Placement of two things,usually abstract concepts,used to compare or contrast
What is parody/spoofing? Something created in order to mock in a humorous manner
What is burlesque? It is a literary,dramatic,or musical work intended to cause laughter about the original work.
What is a Double Entendres/Pun? A figure of speech in which a phrase or set of words is meant to be viewed/understood in two different ways.
What is an antithesis? An obvious contrast or direct opposite in setting, character, events, symbolism, morals, etc.
What is an anticlimax? A disappointing resolution to a conflict or plot development.
