| Simile | A comparison that uses ‘like’ or ‘as’ |
| Metaphor | A comparison that does NOT use ‘like’ or ‘as’ |
| Hyperbole | A great exaggeration |
| Personificaion | When animals or objects have human characteristics or act like humans |
| Idiom | An expression that means something different than what the words say. |
| Understatement | When something is set up as ‘less important’ or ‘no big deal’, when it really is |
| Symbolism | Using objects to show an idea |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that copy the natural sound of things |
| Synecdoche | When a part of something represents the whole or it may use a whole to represent a part. |
| Apostrophe | A part in a story when a character is talking to someone who is not there |
| Metonymy | When a word or phrase is replaced with something that is related to it. |
| Allegory | a COMPLETE story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to have a hidden meaning, usually a moral or political meaning |
| Assonance | when two or more words close together repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sounds |
| Alliteration | the repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of words close together |
