Poetry terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Onomatopoeia | a word whose sound is similar to the thing or action it refers to, such as "buzz" or "hiss." |
| Simili | a comparison between tow things that aren't similar. Either the word "like" or "as" is used to make the comparison. Ex. Tyler ran like the wind. |
| Alliteration | consonant sounds at the beginnings of words that are in close proximity to each other are repeated. Ex. Silly Sidney swings strongly. |
| Personification | non humans, like animals or objects, are given human ("people like") qualities. Ex. Sleep had found me. |
| Hyperbole | the use of extreme exaggeration to prove a point; it is not taken seriously. Ex. I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse! |
| Assonance | vowel sounds that are stressed or repeated in words that are close to each other. Ex. Mike tried to light the fire. |
| Metaphor | a comparison between two things that aren't similar; "like" or "as" are not used. Ex. Mrs. Milchuk is a bear when she doesn't sleep. |
| Symbol | the use of an object to represent or stand for something that is larger or more important than itself. Ex. The American flag stood proudly on the pole. (The flag stands for the country.) |
| Allusion | a reference to another piece of literature or history that is well known. Ex. The man is a real scrooge when it comes to charity. (A reference to E. Scrooge from A Christmas Carol) |
| Apostrophe | the speaker of the poem "talks" to something of someone as if it were there. Ex. "Hey, Winter, it's time to leave!" |
| Satire | the use of mockery to prove a point. It points out the flaws in humanity in order to teach a lesson or make people aware. Ex. Saturday Night Live skits |
