Literary Terms

FA Grade 8 Literary Terms

QuestionAnswer
Genre Type of literature; Example - historical, fantasy, etc.
Setting The time and place that the plot or story takes place (where AND when).
Characters The actors or important people in the story.
Plot The story line or rising action that leads to the climax.
Climax The point at which the outcome of the conflict can be predicted; the point when the rising action becomes the falling action.
Antagonist The evil opponent in the story that contributes to the conflict/the tension.
Protaganist The hero who resolves the conflict/releases the tension.
Falling Action Occurs after the climax - concludes the story.
Theme The message of the story - moral, political, religious, emotional, etc.
