Literary terms for Freshman English- Drama

TermDefinition
drama a story that is made for acting on a stage; it uses conflict, character contrast, dialogue
character a person in a story OR the personality qualities that make one person different from others
monologue a speech made by a character who is completely ALONE on stage
soliloquoy a long speech made by a character while other people are on stage with him/her
stage directions words that tell the actors in a play what they are supposed to do or where to go; the words are usually in italics
tragedy a drama in which the main character suffers horribly because of some flaw or problem in him/herself
tragic hero a character that has a noble (high morals, excellent person) beginning, but ends up in trouble because of some flaw or problem inside him/her
tragic flaw a weakness, flaw, or problem in a character that leads to his/her fall or great trouble
aside something the character says in a whisper to the audience; the other characters aren't supposed to hear it
downfall ruin, going down to a lower position, end of good life
