Short story terms

TermDefinition
story elements It is the setting, plot, characters, conflict and theme.
character a person or a animal the takes part in the action of literary work.
traits a distinguishing quality
theme a central message or insight into life revealed through literary work.
plot sequence of events in literary work.
exposition writing or speech that explains a process or presents information.
rising action all of the events leading up to the climax.
climax high point of interest or suspense.
falling action it is what leads to the resolution
resolution general insight or change is conveyed
conflict a struggle between opposing forces.
man vs. man a conflict between two people
man vs. society a conflict between someone and the governmental problems
man vs. nature the conflict between someone and nature, for example plants, or like wild life.
man vs. supernatural the conflict that is between someone and monsters.
man vs. self the conflict that someone id having with them self.
point of view directs the type and amount of information the writer reveals.
fable a short story, typically with animals as characters, conveying a moral.
folk tale a story originating in popular culture, typically passed on by word of mouth
