Literary Terms

Poems specificaly

TermDefinition
Hyperbole A deliberate exaggeration. Ex: My cat weighs a ton
Idiom A saying that cant be understood by the individual words. Ex: I've been in the doghouse ever since I forgot to do the dishes
Personification Giving things that are not human personalities and abilities . Ex: the wind whistled a happy tune.
Metaphor A comparison of two unlike things without using the words like or as. Ex: The teacher was a he.
simile A figure of speech that compares two unlike things USING the words like or as. Ex: Her smile was like a rainbw.
Onomatopoeia Word that are sounds. (Imitate) Ex: Bang, brrrr, clang, ding, and wolf.
Alliteration Word that sound similar but are NOT rhyme. Ex: Slimy slugs slither slowly down the sidewalk.
