| Nonfiction | Writing that is based on facts |
| Fiction | Writing that includes made up stories, events, and people |
| Biography | book about some that is written by someone else |
| autobiography | book about someone's own life written by then |
| narrative poem | tells a story |
| lyrics poems | makes the reader feel emotions/mood |
| monologue | speech gives by one person on stage when others are on stage to the audience |
| soliloquy | speech given on stage by one person and are on stage alone |
| aside | short comment to audience or another character in play |
| plot | sequence of events in a story |
| exposition | setting, characters, and conflict introduced |
| climax | turning point |
| resolution/denouement | final section of plot/ ties up the loose ends of the story |
| flashback | is a scene or even that happened before the beginning of a story (sometimes interrupts a scene) |
| foreshadowing | giving clues about something before it happens |
| theme | the message that the author wants you to take away from a story |
| inference | making a guess based on information from text |
| setting | when and where |
| first person point of view | i did this, i did that i, me, we |
| third person omiscient | a narrator outside of the action can see everything and everywhere. He, she, they |
| third person limited | a narrator outside of the article tells about one character and only tells about them |
