Literary terms for freshman English- Plot
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| plot | what happens in a story, the sequence of events |
| exposition | the beginning part of the story that tells what you need to know to understand the story: where and when, who's in it |
| setting | where and when a story takes place |
| conflict | the problem or issue that needs to be solved |
| rising action | what happens early in the story; usually the conflict or tension gets worse |
| climax | the most exciting or important part of the story; called the "turning point" because after the climax, the story changes |
| falling action | what happens after the climax; usually the story is calming down |
| resolution/denouement | the very end when all remaining questions are answered and everything is clear |
| external conflict | problem between a character and someone/something outside of him, ex. another person, nature, society |
| internal conflict | problem inside a character, ex. is this the right thing to do?; "man against himself" |
| dilemma | a difficult choice; both choices are bad or both choices are good |
| character | someone in a story |
