Literary terms for freshman English- characters
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| antagonist/villain | major character, bad guy, values and behaviors are in conflict with protagonist hero |
| protagonist/hero | most important character, usually trying to achieve something |
| narrator | person who tells the story |
| foil | character who contrasts (is the opposite of) or reflects the hero to make him/her look good |
| archetype | perfect example, model, or pattern that many authors copy |
| flat character | character that is not described well, has few details |
| round character | character that is so well described s/he seems alive, described with many details |
| dynamic character | character that changes during the telling of the story |
| static character | character that does NOT change during the story, stays the same |
| characterization | how the author tells you about the characters in his story |
| direct characterization | the author, narrator, or another character just tells you about someone in the story |
| indirect characterization | you have to figure out what a character is like from what s/he says and does; no one tells you |
