PRETERITE TENSE

ER & IR Preterite: Regular and Spell-changing i to y

QuestionAnswer
In ER & IR verbs that have the vowel A, E or O immediately before the ending, the letter "i" always carries _____ an accent mark
Yo form -í yo comí
Tú form -iste tú comiste
Él, Ella, Usted form -ió él comió
Nosotros form -imos nosotros comimos
Vosotros form -isteis vosotros comisteis
Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes form -ieron vosotros comisteis
Verbs that have a vowel before -ER or -IR ending only change in the él, ella, usted and ellos, ellas, ustedes forms
Él, Ella, Usted form (changed) -yó él cayó
Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes form (changed) -yeron ellos cayeron
I fell yo caí
you informal fell tú caíste
he/she/you formal fell él/ella/usted cayó
we fell nosotros caímos
you all Spain fell vosotros caísteis
They/ you all fell ellos/ellas/ustedes cayeron

I heard yo oí
you informal heard tú oíste
he/she/you formal heard él/ella/usted oyó
we heard nosotros oímos
you all Spain heard vosotros oísteis
They/ you all heard ellos/ellas/ustedes oyeron
only when the vowel immediately before -ER or -IR ending is A E O add accent mark on the "í" of every form in the Preterite conjugation, examples: caer, leer, oír
yo distribuir distribuí
tú distribuir distribuiste
él/ella/usted distribuir distribuyó
nosotros distribuir distribuimos
vosotros distribuir distribuisteis
ellos/ellas/ustedes distribuir distribuyeron
distribuir does not have an accent mark on every form of the preterite because the vowel immediately before the ending is U (not A E O)
él/ella/usted: drop i of ió and replace it with y
Ellos/ellas/ustedes: drop I of ieron and replace with y yeron
ER & IR Regular Endings -í -iste -ió -imos -isteis-ieron
ER & IR endings for verbs with the vowel U before the ending -í -iste -yó -imos -isteis-yeron
ER & IR endings for verbs with the vowels A E or O before the ending -í -íste -yó -ímos -ísteis-yeron
strong vowels A E O
weak vowels I U
