Framing Using objects or patterns around an image to make an image look better
Angle of View Perspective, where you are when taking a picture
Rule of Thirds Using an invisible grid with nine equal sized squares, points of emphasis look better when aligned on one of the lines.
Close Ups a close picture of a high point of movement and emphasis
Tone the brightness and contrast or light and shadow
Sharpness The amount of how blurry or sharp an image is.
Arrangement The positioning of an image being taken, depending on point of view
Emphasis Making a high point of interest that draws attention toward it
Balance A balance in picture color, white space and unused spaced. (deals with symmetry)
HDRi creating a higher dynamic range of color and exposures than standard imaging.
Logo A symbol, shape, or illustration used for marketing purposes and symbolises a company. Used on posters, banners and other advertisements
Color Wheel A visual representation when creating or finding a specific color in a specific color range/gamut.
Hue A pure color; without any tinting or shading
Saturation The amount of color allowed in an image; for example: a faded pink could become very bright. No _______ in an image will make it black and white
Chroma The perceived intensity of a color
Tint making a color lighter, mixing it with white
Tone harmonizing colors together
Shade A color made darker; usually made by mixing the color with black
Brightness How bright an image is
RGB The color mode for digital viewing
CMYK The color mode for print
Color Gamut The amount of color that can be used for viewing
Color profiles different color modes for enhanced viewing
Color management keeping the viewing of color the same among many different screen; how you want files converted for optimized viewing
File format what type of file a document is for editing and viewing in specific programs
Review Checking over the document to make sure everything is how you want it
Redesign changing things that you do not like after reviewing
Vector A type of image or shape that recalculates its pixels based on a mathematical formula to make sure that it never gets pixely.
Bitmap another word for raster.
Raster A image or document with assigned pixels that can get pixely if resized.
Typography The study of text
Arrangement how text is arranged
Optimize making an image look better for different devices
White Space barely used or unused space in an image
Proportion the size of an image, also the measurements in an image around the perimeter
Harmony The way that colors help each other out
Serifs a curl or tail to a letter or letters
Leading space in between lines of text
Alignment designing where things should be on a canvas
Repetition repeating an element in an image
San-Serif letters without curves, tails or add-ons
Tracking The space between characters in text
Kerning the space between two letters
Grids horizontal and vertical lines equally apart and perpendicular to each other.
Interactive brochure a digital brochure
Sustainable design a design that will last a long time
Baseline shift the lowest point of most letters
Font families fonts that share similar elements
Usability how well an advertisement works
Grouping Putting elements in specific groups
Pixels Individual squares of color
Readability How well text is read
Hierarchy the way shapes are arranged to attract eyes to a specific point
Filters A color shift applied on top of an image
Work flow The sequencing of work for a group
Rulers Rulers that can be viewed perpendicularly at the top and left of the image
Smoothing a technique used to smooth or blur an image
Focus Group a team of people focused on one problem
Gradient Map applies the gradient by using the lightness and darkness values in the image as a map for how the gradient colors are applied
Design Comps different designs of one image- varying in color, texture, size, layout, etc.
Nameplate a banner on a newsletter telling information about the newsletter
Watermark a faint image in the background of something to show authenticity
Portfolio a collection of information that shows talent
Tri-fold A poster divided into three sections by folds
Vanishing point a point in an image where lines on the image point to in the distance
Feathering Same as blending
Placeholder text generic text that is placed in a document to show where content should be place and show what effects, if any, will be applied
Masthead the box on a newsletter- showing who owns the newsletter, what issue it is, etc.
Continuation lines the place where an article tells you where to go to finish it
Integral margins space between elements on a page
Pull quote a specific quote from an article that is emphasized
End signs a symbol signifying the end of an article
Ladder page by page plan for the yearbook
Gutter space between two facing pages
Spread side by side pages of a book or story
Signature indicates who wrote the book
Bylines a box indicating who contributed to writing an article or book
Flat eight page section of signature
Title page the first page in a book showing the most important information of that book
Project management the process of planning, implementing, designing, and re-designing a project.
Resolution The amount of pixels in an image
