Rise of Feudalism

How did the fall of Rome affect the people of Western Europe? People did not obey Roman laws. Roman soldiers could not keep order. Little kingdoms were always at war with one another.
Why was trade difficult after the fall of Rome? Because roads and bridges were not repaired. Also robbers waited to attack travelers.
Why did schools close after the fall of Rome? Because people lost interest in learning.
Why is the period following the fall of Rome known as the "Dark Ages"? Because the world seemed to be falling down around them.
Who was Charlemagne and what did he do? Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768. He managed to unite all of Western Europe.
What was the Frankish practice regarding land? To give land to nobles in exchange for their promises of loyalty and service.
Why did peasants put themselves in the service of lords? Peasants put themselves in the service of their local lords for security.
What is feudalism? Feudalism is a political and military system characterized by the exchange of land for military service.
How did feudalism differ from the political and military system of the Roman Empire? Feudalism is local control of a area by a lord. There was little common defense against invaders. The Roman Empire had central control over a lot of land.
Who was a serf and who was a lord? A serf is a person bound to the lord's land. A lord is a person who was given land by their rulers in exchange for military service.
