Alliteration If you repeat the same first letters in a poem
Metaphor Comparing something to another thing in a mix of words
Onomatopoeia Describing something with a sound that means the same thing to you
Personification Saying something about an object that only living things can do
Repitition Repeating of a word to add rhythm and to emphasize the meaning of a certain idea
Rhyme When you use two words that sound alike in a poem
Rhyme Scheme Where rhyming is organized in different patterns
Rhythm Way a poem flows to the next line
Simile Compares two things with like or as
Stanza A group of lines of poetry which have rhythm and rhyming in them
Verse A single line of poetry
Riddle A poem that makes you think for an answer
Couplet Two lines of poetry that have the same length and rhyme
Refrain A part of a poem that repeats after a few stanzas
Narrative Poem Poems that have a plot, character, and setting that tell stories
Meter A rhythmical pattern of a poem; Same length and stresses in each verse
Acrostics A poem where the stanza tells about the first verse
Cinquain A five line poem; First and Last: Synonyms; Second: Two words describing the title; Third: Three words show action relating to the title; Fourth: Four words that show feelings or emotion
Clerihew Four lined poem that makes a brief, humorous statement about a person. First: Ends with person's name; Second: Rhymes with first; Three and Four: Rhyme with each other
Concrete Poem A poem that is arranged into the shape of what the poem is about
Diamonte A poem that goes from the subject at the top of the diamond to another totally different subject at the bottom
