What is the most energy-efficient beverage container on the market? Refillable glass
What are the benefits of refillable- glass containers? They cost less for the product, create jobs, and they lessen waste
Why are plastics desirable? They are desirable because they are reuseable, light weight, durable, and unbreakable
What are the advantages of burning solid waste? reduced trash volume, less need for landfills, low water pollution, quick and easy
What are the disadvantages of burning solid waste? High cost, air pollution, toxic ash is produced, encourages waste production, discourages recycling and waste reduction.
What is hazardous waste? discarded solid or liquid material that may explode and/or release toxic fumes- this material is toxic, ignitbale, corrosive, and reactive
What is the resource conservation and recovery act? It regulates about 5% of the US hazardous waste- also known as the cradle to grave act)
What is the comprehensive environmental response, compensation, and lilabilty act? identifies hazardous waste sites, the worst sites go on the national priorties list and are scheduled for cleanup, brownfields are also cleaned up as well (factories, wastelands, gas stations)
What are brown fields? Areas that have been abandoned or are idle sites
What are the advantages of deep underground wells? safe if sites are chosen correctly, easy to do, low cost,
What are the disadvantages of deep underground wells? leaks or spills at the surface, exisitng fractures can allow waste to escape underground, and encourages waste production
How is mercury released? Through burning coal and the incineration of wastes-considered a neurotoxin
What are sources of mercury posioning? Fluorscent lightbulbs, burning coal
What is methyl mercury ? organic mercury- formation of this occurs faster in acidic bodies of water
What are dioxins> chlorinated hydrocarbons produced during waste incineration and paper bleaching- they are also carcinogens
