Chapter 18 Review

Earth Science

QuestionAnswer
What are volcanoes fueled by? All volcanoes are fueled by magma deep within the Earth's crust.
What are three factors that affect the formation of magma? 1.Temperature 2.Water Content 3.Pressure
What does temperature do as depth increases? What does pressure do? With depth pressure increases, the temperature at which a substance melts also increases.
What are three types of magma? Give the relative viscosty of each and the type of eruption each usually fuels. 1.Basaltic magma-viscosity low-eruption type least explosive...ooze-y 2.Andesitic magma-viscosity intermediate-eruption type-intermediate 3.Rhyolitic magma-viscosity high-eruption type-greatest explosiveness
How does silica content affect the viscosity of magma? The amount of silica in magma increases its viscosity.
How does the viscosity of magma relate to the relative violence with which a volcano erupts? Higher viscosity = More violence
What are three ways magma can interact with the overlying crust? 1.Wedge into it 2.Melt it 3.Break pieces off
What are plutons? When magma cools, minerals form. Over a very long period of time, these minerals will combine to form intrusive igneous rock bodies, or rock formations that formed underground from magma, are called plutons.
What are batholiths and stocks? Both are irregular shaped plutons. Batholiths are the biggest pluton, and stocks are similar but are smaller in size.
What are laccoliths? A mushroom shaped pluton w/ a round top and a flat bottom.
