Explain what happens during the Kiln seasoning process? Timber stacked on trolley with stickers between planks for air circulation. Steam piped into kiln to warm stack & prevent fast drying. Heating coils warm the air & humidity is reduced slowly. Fans circulate steam & warm air to heat the stack uniformly.
State two advantages and two disadvantages of Air / Natural Seasoning. Advantages: Inexpensive, Easily managed, No specialist labour required, No expensive equipment needed. Disadvantages: Slow, No control over final MC, MC of only 18% achievable, Weather dependent, Boards prone to fungus/insect attack.
State two advantages and two disadvantages of Artificial Seasoning. Advantages: Exact moisture content achieved, More control over seasoning, Uniform circulation of Air. Quick method. Disadvantages: Expensive to set up, Skilled operator needed, Different drying schedules for various species.
Explain what is meant by the term Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC). The balance of moisture between the atmosphere and the wood.
State TWO reasons for the use of preservatives. To stop the wood from rotting. Protects from woodworm. To prevent dry rot. To colour or alter appearance.
Name TWO classes of preservative. Solvent. Water-borne. Tar Oils.
Name THREE methods of applying preservatives. Roller application. Brush. Spray application. Soaking - Dipping - Pressure
