Vocabulary for the Algebra I STAAR 1 of 3

TermDefinition
Constant a term that does not contain a variable. (In 3x+4, the 4 is a constant.)
Intersection where two lines cross or where one line crosses one of the axes
Reflection a type of transformation involving a flip of the graphed figure
Translation a type of transformation involving a slide of the graphed figure
Transformation a change in position, size, or shape of a figure on a coordinate plane
Variable a symbol, usually a letter, used to represents a number
Continuous data whose input variable is graphed as connected points
Dependent can also be called output, y-axis, and range
Discrete data whose input variable only has certain values, graphed in unconnected, distinct points
Domain the set of all inputs of a function
Function an input value from the first set has only one output value in the second se
Independent can also be called input, x-axis, and domain
Function Notation f(x)=y
Range the set of all outputs of a function
Coefficient the numerical part of the term
Distributive Property for any numbers a, b, and c: a(b + c) = ab + ac
Equation a mathematical sentence showing two expressions are equal
Inequality mathematical sentences having the symbols <, >, ≤, or ≥
Inverse Operations operations that undo each other
Like Terms terms that have the same variable and exponent
