ABC's of perception

QuestionAnswer
Perception The way your brain interprets the sensory information from the senses
Constancy Always being the same and rarely changing
FIgure-ground Relating to the perception of images of the objects in the background that stand out
Reversible figures Picture where the for ground and the background can be reversed
Proximity Close in space, or time
Similarity Having the same characteristics as another object
Closure That our mind tends to see a whole when there are many parts
Continuity The tendency to perceive things in a continuous pattern that is simple and flowing not a complex disjointed and complete pattern
Contiguity Objects that are near in space and in time
Common Region In a general area
Depth Perception Being able to tell how far away something is from you in space
Monocular What you can see with one eye
Binocular Using both eyes to see
Linear A system of points that follows a straight path
Relative Something in common with objects, ideas or people
Interposition When two objects overlap the one that you can totally see is the one in front
Visual field What you can see
Illusion Seeing something that is not really there
Texture Gradient Gradually loosing the ability to see texture in the distance
Aerial or atmospheric perspective Things in the distance are not as clear as they are up close
Motion parallax The discrepancy between you and things moving quickly that are next to you and objects in the distance move more slowly
Accommodation A adjustment that was made
Converge/convergence Coming together of two things
Disparity A great difference
Perceptual expectancy Your past experience can change the way you understand or interpret something
Top-down processing The brain knows the whole main idea and there for you can put the pieces together
Bottom-up processing Taking the small pieces and putting them together without knowing what the finished product would be like
