definition of terms

| chord | a segment whose endpoint lie on a circle |
| diameter | a chord that contains the center of a circle |
| secant of a circle | a line that contains a chord |
| tangent to a circle | a line that lies in the plane of a circle and that intersects the circle at exactly one point |
| circle | the set of all points in a plane at a given distance from a given point in the plane |
| radius | a segment from a point on a circle or a sphere to the center |
| congruent circles | circles with the same radius |
| concentric circles | circles that lie in the same plane that share the same center |
| inscribed angle | angle whose vertex lies on a circle and whose sides contain chords of the circle |
| central angle | angle whose vertex is the center of a circle and whose side contain radii of the circle |
| circumference | distance around a circle |
| arc length | a fraction of the circumference of a circle defined by the arc |
| arc of a circle | two points on a circle and the continuous part of the circle between the two points |
| semicircle | an arc of a circle whose end point are the end points of a diameter |
| minor arc | an arc of a circle whose length is less than the length of a semicircle of the circle |
| major arc | an arc of a circle whose length is greater than the length of a semicircle of the cirl |
