What is the main source of light and heat energy on the earth? The Sun
Light travels in straight lines but what are these lines called? Rays
What are luminous bodies? Bodies that give off their own light.
Give an example of a luminous body. Sun, Light bulb, candle
What are non-luminous bodies? Bodies that do not give off their own light. They reflect light.
What do you call the bouncing of light rays off a surface? Reflection
What is refraction? The bending of light as it travels from one medium to another.
Give a use of refraction. Lenses in glasses or telescope
What is the splitting of white light into its seven colours called? Dispersion
What are the seven colours of white light? Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
Which colour is always at the outside of a rainbow? Red
Which colour is always at the inside of a rainbow? Violet
What is responsible for dispersing the sunlight in a rainbow? Water droplets in the air (rain)
What do you use in the lab to disperse white light into its seven colours? Prism
What is the more common name for the seven colours of white light? The spectrum
Which type of lens causes parallel light rays to focus on the one point? Convex (Converging) Lens
Which type of lens causes parallel light rays to spread out? Concave (Diverging) Lens
What is the dark area behind an object, caused by light rays being blocked out, more commonly known as? A Shadow
