| simile | a comparison of two things using like or as, example: He's old as dirt |
| metaphor | a direct comparison of two things without using like or as, example: Her honesty is a beacon of hope. |
| hyperbole | extreme exaggeration to make a point, example: I'm so hungry I could eat a horse. |
| Alliteration | repetition of initial consonant sounds, example: She constantly sneezes at spicy soups. |
| personification | nonhuman characters are given human abilities, example: The moon smiled on the sleeping town. |
| idiom | a common phrase that means something different than what it says, example: She sticks her nose in everybody's business. |
| onomatopoeia | words that represent sound, example: The phone rang. The clock ticked. The frog croaked. The wind whirled. |
