The meanings of common proverbs and adages

TermDefinition
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Having something you can be sure of is better taking a chance on something riskier.
A fool and his money are easily parted. Someone who does not take care when spending money can lose it easily.
A house divided against itself cannot stand. If people of a country, company, or other organization do not work together, it will not last.
A leopard cannot change its spots. You cannot change who you are on the inside.
A penny saved is a penny earned. When you save money instead of spending it, it will gradually add up.
A picture paints a thousand words. A picture (or other visual presentation) can help someone see or understand something better than a wordy verbal description.
Actions speak louder than words. People will make a stronger impression based on what you do more than what you say, especially if you do not follow through on what you say.
Blood is thicker than water. Bonds with one's family are more lasting than those with friends.
Don't count your chickens until they hatch. Don't make plans on how to spend money until you actually get it rather than going by what you PREDICT you will get.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Be greatful when you receive a gift rather than suspiciously looking for a fault in it (or in the giver's motive).
Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Avoid putting all your resources in only one possibility, as it may not work out.
Birds of a feather flock together. People who have similar interests tend to become friends, which can cause people to form an impression of your character based on those of your friends.
Beauty is only skin deep. While a person may be "good looking," it does not mean the person has a nice character.
Every cloud has a silver lining. Difficult times will eventually get better.
Great minds think alike. Wise people often think about things in a similar way.
Haste makes waste. Doing things quickly and carelessly causes one to do a poor job at it.
It takes two to tango. In a conflict between two people, both of them usually contribute to it, even if one does not intend to.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Don't hurt a person after the person helps you.
Practice makes perfect. The more you practice doing something, the better you will get at it.
The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When you "beat" a larger, tougher opponent, they will feel the bigger loss.
Variety is the spice of life. Trying different things will make your life more exciting.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. By eating healthy snacks, you are less likely to get sick and need a doctor.
You are what you eat. The kind of foods you eat will affect your health, according to whether they are healthy or unhealthy.

Look before you leap. It's better to think over things carefully than to make a decision quickly and carelessly.
Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. When one is well rested, he or she tends to be healthier and more productive.
Idle hands are the devil's workshop. People who are not busy at something often do things that get them in trouble.
Walk a mile in someone's shoes before you judge them. You should not judge someone if you have not been through their experiences.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. You may think things are better for another person, but they may go through things you don't get to see.
All that glitters is not gold. Something that looks pretty and/or shiny may be worthless.
