Literary Devices

Specific literary terms and their definitions

TermDefinition
Allegory An abstract concept symbolized by a more concrete idea
Alliteration Repetition of the same sound within a group of words
Allusion A brief reference to a person, place, or thing in history
Analogy A relationship between two concepts, one old and one new, based on their similarities
Assonance Repetition of the same vowel sound within a group of words
Asyndeton The leaving out of conjunctions, while still making grammatical sense
Consonance Repetition of the same consonant sound within a group of words
Euphemism A less abrasive term taking the place of a term that is usually very negative sounding
Foreshadowing Words or phrases that indicate something that is about to happen
Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration
Imagery Words or phrases that help the readers paint a specific mental picture
Metaphor A comparison of two things without using the signal words "like" or "as"
Onomatopoeia Words that represent specific sounds
Oxymoron Two contrasting words/ideas put together to make sense in a new way
Paradox Two contradicting ideas put together to create a deeper meaning
Personification Giving human traits to inanimate objects or animals
Polysyndeton The frequent use of conjunctions within a sentence
Simile A comparison using the signal words "like" or "as"
Synecdoche When the part of something refers to a whole of something and vice versa
Understatement Presenting something as smaller or less important than it actually is to indicate its significance
