These are the terms you'll need for assessments this year.

| Homonym | Words spelt the same but have a different meaning (wind, minute,live) |
| Homophone | Words that sound the same but spelt differently (pane/pain) |
| Hyperbole | A gross exaggeration |
| Informal language | casual, everyday |
| Literal | Actual meaning of something |
| Metaphor | Direct comparison (The lake is a mirror) |
| Onomatopoeia | Sound of the word suggests the meaning (snap) |
| Personification | Giving human characteristics to no human subjects |
| Acronym | Word made of initial letters (ANZAC) |
| Alliteration | Repetition of initial letters |
| Antonym | Word of opposite meaning |
| Cliche | An overused saying |
| Colloquial | An everyday expression |
| Dialect | Regional language or accents |
| Dialogue | Conversation between two people |
| Monologue | A one way conversation |
| Euphemism | Polite way of saying something |
| Figurative language | Comparisons (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole) |
| Pun | Play on words |
| Repetition | Words or phrases that are repeated |
| Rhetorical question | A question that doesn't require an answer |
| Sarcasm | The opposite of what is really meant (Good one!) |
| Simile | Indirect comparison using like or as or than |
| Synonym | A word of similar meaning |
| Symbolism | Where something represents something else |
