Literary Terms for 8th grade ELA

| poem | composition written in verse |
| rhyme | when words have similar ending sounds; in poetry it refers to the similar sounds within or at the ends of lines |
| stanza | a paragraph of poetry |
| line | |
| rhyme scheme | the pattern of rhymes used in a poem, usually marked by letters to symbolize correspondences, ex: ababbcc. |
| end rhyme | the rhyme of the last syllables of lines of poetry. |
| internal rhyme | a rhyme created by two or more words in the same line of verse. |
| rhythm | |
| simile | comparison of two things using the words like or as |
| metaphor | comparing two unlike things-- without using like or as |
| couplet | |
| onamatopoeia | sound words ex; snap, crackle, pop, buzz |
| personification | giving human qualities to inhuman things ex: the dish ran away with the spoon (dishes don't run--people do!) |
| alliteration | words that are near one another or are consecutive and start with the same sounds |

| hyperbole | exaggeration ex: I'm so hungry I could eat a horse! |
