Mass is measured in ____ or _____. Grams, kilograms
The amount of force of space occupied by a sample of matter. Volume
Volume is measured in ____(_) and ____(_) as well as in ________(_) and ________(_), Liters(L),milliliters(mL),cubic centimeters(cm3),cubic meter(m3)
The unit of mass is ____ . Grams(g)
The instrument used to measure mass is the _____________. Electronic balance
The unit of volume of a liquid is ______(_) as well as ______(_). Milliliters(mL),cubic centimeters (cm3
The instrument used to find the volume of a liquid is the ______. Graduated cylinder
The unit of volume for a rectangular solid is the ________. Cubic centimeter
The instrument used to find the volume of a rectangular solid is the _______. Metric ruler
The _____ of a substance is the mass of the substance that fills one unit of volume. Density
Density is usually measured in ______________. Grams per cubic centimeter(g/cm3)
What is the unit of measure for the graduated cylinder? Milliliters(mL)
What is the maximum volume a graduated cylinder can measure? 100mL
What is the minimum volume a graduated cylinder can measure? 10mL
What is the number of units measured by the smallest division on the graduated cylinders scale? 1mL
Write down the procedure for finding the mass of 50mL of water. Find the mass of the empty graduated cylinder. Find the mass of the graduated cylinder with 50mL of water. Subtract the mass of the empty graduated cylinder and you will have the mass of water only.
Does changing the volume of water change the mass of 1cm3 of water? No,the mass of water is always 1g/cm3.
Does changing the mass of water change the mass of 1cm3 of water? The mass of water is still 1g/cm3.
What is the density of water in grams per cubic centimeter? Density of water is 1g/cm3.
Does changing the mass or volume of water change it's density? No the density of water is always 1g/cm3.
Why is density a characteristic property? Density is a characteristic property because it is not affected by the amount or shape of a substance. It can be used to help identify a substance.
Are densities of the different substances the same or different? The densities are all different however if you round to the nearest whole number the way, transparent plastic, and white plastic would all be 1g/cm3. The aluminum is quite different.
What is the difference between mass and volume? Mass is the amount of matter in an object and volume is the amount of space occupied by a sample of matter.
What units did you use to measure mass and volume? The units you used to measure mass is in grams or kilograms. The unit to measure volume is in Liters(L) and milliliters(mL) as well as in cubic centimeters(cm3) and cubic meters(m3).
How did you calculate the density of an object? You calculate the density of an object by dividing mass by volume(d=m/v).
What units did you use to measure density? Density is measured in grams per cubic centimeters(g/cm3)
Does changing the amount of a substance change it's density? The amount of a substance does not change the density. The density remains the same(intensive property).
If two objects are made from the same substance, will they have the same density? Yes they will have the same densities because they have the same characteristic properties.
Kilograms and grams are the units of ____. Mass
A measure of amount of matter in an object. Mass
Does not change if gravity changes. Mass
The instrument used to measure mass is the _______. Electronic balance
Canberra used to identify a substance. Mass and weight
Both are properties of matter. Mass and weight
Both are measurements. Mass and weight
___________ are directly proportional. Mass and weight
Weight is measured I the units called ______. Newtons
Is a measure of the force of gravity acting on a certain mass. Weight
______ changes if gravity changes. Weight
The instrument used to measure weight is a ________. Spring scale
Wax block (0.42g/cm3). Float or sink? Float
White plastic block (0.39g/cm3). Float or sink? Float
Transparent block.Float or sink? Float
Aluminum block (2.63g/cm3). Float or sink? Sink
Is there a relationship between density and floating and sinking in water? If so,describe what this relationship is. If your sample has a density that's greater of water it will sink. If your sample has a density that less than water it will float.
Do the liquids of vegetable oil, corn syrup, and water mix together(miscible) or form distinct layers (immiscible)? The liquids are immiscible because they form distinct layers.
What is a PFD? In a disaster at sea life vests(also known as personal flotation devices or PFD) can save lives.
Why did the titanic float? Most of her volume was occupied by air. Air has a density of about one thousandth of water. The average density of the ship was less rap than the density of water.
Why did the titanic sink? When the titanic hit the iceberg, water rushed into the ships hull and displaced the air. The average density of the water and the steel ship was greater than the density of water. The titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic.
States that the buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. Archimedes principle
An attribute that can be used to help identify a substance. A characteristic property is not affected by the amount or shape of a substance. Characteristic property
The mass of a known volume of a substance. It is usually measured in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3). Density
The amount of a liquid that an object replaces-the difference between the initial position of something and only later position. Displacement
A term used to describe liquids that are unable to dissolve in one another. Immiscible
A measure of the amount of matter in an object. Mass is measured in grams or kilograms. Mass
The curved upper surface of a column of liquid. Meniscus
A term used to describe liquids that are able to dissolve in one another. Miscible
The amount of space occupied by a sample matter. Volume is measured in liters(L) and milliliters(mL) as well as in cubic centimeters (cm3)'and cubic meters (m3). Volume
