Why did the English want colonies in North America? The English wanted to find gold and other resources. They also didn't want the Spanish to take all the land.
Where was the first English colony? Roanoke Island
What event happened that greatly angered the Spanish? Sir Frances Drake raided Spanish ships,taking their gold and other valuable resources.
What type of government was established in Jamestown? The House of Burgesses, a self-government, was established in Jamestown.
How did Jamestown settlers avoid starvation? They planted crops, dug wells, and built houses.
What colonies did the French found as a result of searching for the Northwest Passage. The French founded Quebec and New France.
What contributed most to the growth and success of Quebec? The trade of beaver fur
What river did the Dutch take control of as a result of searching for the Northwest Passage? The Hudson River
Why did the Pilgrims choose to leave their homelands? They wanted to break away from the church of England and wanted religious freedom.
Why did the Pilgrims go to Plymouth The Pilgrims were heading for Virginia when a storm blew them off course. They landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
What types of difficulties did the Pilgrims face? The Pilgrims faced cold and harsh winters, diseases, and hunger.
What group helped the Pilgrims survive at Plymouth colony? The Wampanoag Native Americans
Why did Puritans send a small group of colonists ahead of the others? The Puritans wanted these colonists to get the colony started for the others.
Which region had the longest growing season? The Southern colony region
What happened to the dissenters of Puritan rules in Massachusetts? Dissenters of Puritan rules were kicked out of their Puritan colony. They had to found their own one.
What made one New England colony from another? Massachusetts had strict religious rules, saying that you have to be one religion. Rhode Island that you can practice any religion.
How did many of the middle and southern colonies get settled? The middle colonies were founded by King Charles giving land to people like William Penn because the King owed the family money. The southern colonies were founded mostly for religious freedom.
What was the result of the Europeans' search for the Northwest Passage? The founding of new colonies, such as Quebec and New Amsterdam.
How were Puritans similar to Pilgrims? Both of these groups were seeking religious freedom from the church of England.
