Vocabulary Words for ESL Driver Ed

| Ahead | in front of you (Road Work Ahead, Stop Ahead) |
| Airport | the place where airplanes land and take-off |
| All Way | every way, all directions (All Way Stop intersection--all 4 corners have stop signs) |
| Alternate | a different way to go, sometimes temporary (Alternate 94) |
| Arrow | points in the direction you are to go |
| Begin | start (Road Work Begins) |
| Between Signs | in the middle (No Parking Between Signs) |
| Beyond | farther away or after (No Parking Beyond This Point |
| Bike | a vehicle with two wheels and no motor (Bike Trail) |
| Block-1 | the distance or area from one intersection to the next intersection. |
| Block-2 | in front of something (Do Not Block Driveway) |
| Bridge | structure that crosses a river or road |
| Bump | a place in the road where the pavement goes up or down, you need to slow down for a bump |
| Business | an area of offices, stores, companies (Business Highway 12) |
| Bypass | a way to go around something (53 Bypass) |
| Careful | pay attention, watch for danger (Be Careful of Falling Rocks) |
| Cattle | cows, bulls, beef animals (Cattle Crossing) |
| Caution | be careful, watch out, pay attention (Caution - Wet Floor) |
| Clearance | how much space overhead near a bridge or over pass (12 FT Clearance) |
| Closed | shut (Road Closed) |
| Commercial | business(Commercial District) Example: downtown Eau Claire |
| Construction | building or repair on a street or road (Road Construction Ahead) |
| Controlled | traffic lights are present (Controlled Intersection) |
| County | a large area of land within a state (County Road) |
| Crossing | a place to go across a street or road (Cattle Crossing, School Crossing) |
| Crosswalk | a place to cross the street (Pedestrian Crosswalk) |
| Curb | the concrete border at the edge of the street |
| Decrease | slow down or go slower |
| Deer | a wild animal that lives in the woods and may run across a road or highway (DEER CROSSING, DEER XING) |
| Detour | a different way to go |
| Dip | a place in the road where the road goes down and then up |
| Direction | tells you which way to go--North, South, East, West, Right, Left, Ahead |
| Divided | separated (Divided Highway) |
| Double | two times (Double Fines in Construction Zones) |
| Down | opposite of up (Slow Down) |
