| alliteration | the repitition of initial consanant sounds. |
| allusion | a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of an act. |
| analogy | make a comparison between two or more things that are similar in some ways but otherwise unalike. |
| anecdote | a brief story about an interesting, amusing, or strange story. |
| argument | an oral disagreement; verbal opposition; contention; altercation. |
| climax | the high point of interest or suspense. |
| colloquialism | of ordinary or familiar conversation. |
| complex sentence | a sentence containing one or more dependent clauses in addition to the main clause. |
| compound sentence | a sentence containing two or more independent clauses, usually joined by one or more conjunctions. |
| concrete details | a detail you get directly from a source. |
| connotation | the set ideas associated with it in addition to its explicit meaning. |
| denotation | a words dictionary meaning, independent of other associations that the word may have. |
| dialogue | conversation between characters. |
| diction | style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words. |
