line short division in poetry like a "sentence"
stanza a long division of poetry like a "paragraph"
speaker the narrator of the poem, who is not necessarily the poet
poetry writing that takes the sound of words into account to create meaning
prose "regular writing" that you would find in a novel or article
rhythm the beat created by the sound of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem
Rhyme Scheme the pattern of similar sounds in a poem ex.AABB
Imagery the use of words to create an image in the reader's head, usually by appealing to one of the five senses
personifaction giving human characteristics to an animal or object ex. the wind screamed, pounding its mighty fists on the door
free verse poetry written without a set meter (rhythm) or rhyme scheme
similie a comparision using "like" or "as"
metaphor comparing one thing to another without using "like" or "as"
onomatopoeia words that imitate sounds
concrete poems poetry in which the words are arranged in a shape that adds to the meaning
haiku short poems made up of three lines. The lines usually have 5-7-5 syllable pattern. They are usually about nature, and originated in Japan.
alliteration the repetition of the same first letter in at least two words
allusion a reference to a well-known work of literature
