Poetry Terms

| line | short division in poetry like a "sentence" |
| stanza | a long division of poetry like a "paragraph" |
| speaker | the narrator of the poem, who is not necessarily the poet |
| poetry | writing that takes the sound of words into account to create meaning |
| prose | "regular writing" that you would find in a novel or article |
| rhythm | the beat created by the sound of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem |
| Rhyme Scheme | the pattern of similar sounds in a poem ex.AABB |
| Imagery | the use of words to create an image in the reader's head, usually by appealing to one of the five senses |
| personifaction | giving human characteristics to an animal or object ex. the wind screamed, pounding its mighty fists on the door |
| free verse | poetry written without a set meter (rhythm) or rhyme scheme |
| similie | a comparision using "like" or "as" |
| metaphor | comparing one thing to another without using "like" or "as" |
| onomatopoeia | words that imitate sounds |
| concrete poems | poetry in which the words are arranged in a shape that adds to the meaning |
| haiku | short poems made up of three lines. The lines usually have 5-7-5 syllable pattern. They are usually about nature, and originated in Japan. |
| alliteration | the repetition of the same first letter in at least two words |
| allusion | a reference to a well-known work of literature |
