TermDefinition
chemistry is the study of the properties of mater and how matter changes
elenent an element is a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means
compound a compound is a substance made of two or more elements chemically combined is a specific ration, or proportion
mixture a mixture is made from two or more pure substances elements, compounds, or both that are in the same place but not combined as a new material
solution a solution is a well mixed mixture
physical change a change that alters the form or appearance of a material but does not make the material into another substance is called a physical change
chemical change a change in matter that produces new substances is called a chemical change
precipitate a solid that forms from solution during a chemical reaction is called s precipitate
atom the smallest particle of an element is an atom
molecule a molecule is the combination of two or more atoms
chemical bond the force that holds atoms together is called a chemical bond
chemical equation a chemical equation is a shorter, easier way to show chemical reactions, using symbols instead of words
symbol most elements are represented by a one letter or two letter symbol
chemical formula a compound is represented by a "word ," called chemical formula which shows the ratio of elements in the compound
subscript a subscript show the number of atoms of an element is a molecule
reactants the materials you have at the beginning of a chemical reaction are reactants
products when the reaction is complete, you have different materials, called the products of the reaction
coefficient a coefficient is a number in front of a chemical formula in the equation
synthesis when two or more substances (elements or compounds) combine to make a more complex substance, the process is called synthesis
decomposition a decomposition reaction breaks down compounds into simpler products
replacement reaction a reaction in which one element replaces another in a compound or in which two elements in different compounds trade places, is called a replacement reaction
exothermic reaction a reaction that releases energy in the form of heat is called an exothermic reaction
endothermic reaction a reaction that absorbs energy is called an endothermic reaction
activation reaction activation reaction is the minimum amount of energy that has to be added to start a reaction
concentration concentration is the amount of one material in a given volume of another material
catalyst a catalyst is a material that increases the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy
enzymes enzymes provide a surface on which reactions take place
inhibitor a material used to decrease the rate of a reaction is called an inhibitor
combustion combustion is a rapid reaction between oxygen and a substance called a fuel
fuel a fuel is a material that releases energy when it burns

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
