Why was the location in which the Aztecs developed a good place for a civilization to settle? it is an area that has lakes and fertile soil
The city of Teotihuacan;"City of the Gods" was an early city-state that arose in the first century that was the center of a major trade network
In Teotihuacan,the most important trade item was obsidian which was which was a green or black volcanic glass used to make sharp objects.
The earliest civilization in this area/region built a structure which measured some 200 feet high and 3,000 feet around its base called the Pyramid of the Sun
These people rose to power around 900 AD, were warlike, based their empire on conquest, worshiped a warlike god, and ruled over central Mexico for about 300years. These were the Toltecs
A king;Topiltzin tried to replace the warlike god with a peaceful one called Quetzalcoatl
By 1428,this became the leading power in the Valley of Mexico and soon gained control over neighboring regions. the Triple Alliance
How did the Aztecs maintain power in the empire? by military conquest and demanding them to pay tribute in the form of gold,maize,cotton, and jade.
Who was the leader of the Aztecs? an emperor that controlled both religion/government and was treated as a god
The Aztec noble class was made up of military leaders, government officials, and priests
Below the noble class in Aztec society were the commoners which were merchants, craft workers, soldiers, and farmers
The Aztec capital city was Tenochtitlan
What did the Aztec's create to connect their capital city to the mainland? long causeways
Why did Aztec priests sacrifice humans atop the Great Temple? because they believed that without regular offerings of blood, the sun god would not make the sun rise and all life would die.
Why did thehe Aztecs create both religious and agricultural calendars? they needed a way to keep track of when they had to perform varied religious rituals/ public ceremonies honoring their gods and when to grow their crops.
Who did the Aztecs use for sacrificial victims? slaves,criminals, and people offered as tribute from conquered territories
Why did conquered peoples rebel against the Aztecs? people rebelled against the Aztecs because they were being sacrificed more and more
What event did the Aztecs see as the most terrible omen for their empire? When the Spanish arrived,many Aztecs saw their arrival as a sign that their empire was going to end
What ruled Aztec life? their polytheistic religion
How did the Aztecs go from being a poor, nomadic people to being wealthy empire builders? by controlling an extensive trade enpire,building a powerful military,and settled in an area that was excellent for agriculture
