Sculpting Skills
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| seven basic sculpting procedures | 1. section 2. position head 3. part 4. distribute 5. project 6. position fingers/shears 7. sculpt design line |
| head position | upright, forward or tilted, directly influences the fall of the hair, which affects the texture and the direction of the sculpted line |
| distribution | the direction the hair is combed in relation to its base parting |
| four types of distribution | natural, perpendicular, shifted, and directional. |
| natural distribution | the direction the hair assumes as it falls naturally from the head due to gravity |
| perpendicular distribution | the hair is combed at a 90 degree or right angle from its base parting. used for primarily graduated and layered forms |
| shifted distribution | hair is combed out of natural distribution in any direction except perpendicular to its base parting. |
| directional distribution | hair is distributed in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal direction. |
| projection | also known as elevation, is the angle which the hair is held in relation to the curve of the head prior to and while sculpting. |
| slide cutting | technique in which slightly closed shears slide along the strand to produce rapid length increase |
| slithering | refereed to as efiliating, a technique in which the shears are opened and closed rhythmically while moving upward from the ends |
| slithering removes | bulk and creates mobility |
| slide cutting | technique in which slightly closed shears slide along the strand to produce a rapid length increase. |
| razor rotation | technique is performed by rotating the razor and the comb in a light circular motion to reduce bulk and blend the form. hair should also be damp when performing this. |
| razor etching | used to reduce weight or remove length. hair is carved into with a razor using back and forth motion. |
| mobile design line | moveable guide that consists of a small amount of previously sculpted hair which is used as a length guide subsequent partings. |
| stationary design line | constant, stable guide to which all lengths are directed |
| design line | artistic pattern or length used while sculpting and can be stationary or mobile. |
| texturizing | referred to as tapering or thinning, involved sculpting short lengths within the form. |
| slicing | performed by gliding the open shears along the surface of the hair to achieve mobility. |
